Is there a doctor in the house?
Hello all,
My electric blue Jack Dempsey, Marbles, is about 4 years old and has had this growth out of, what appears to be, his right nostril for a few months now. When I first bought him as a baby, he had an eye infection on the same side, and is subsequently blind in that eye. Everyone else in the tank appears well, with the exception of some occasional flashing. The attached picture is not great (cell phone camera) so I will attempt to describe his growth. It is off white, somewhat 'shiny', and has the coloration and appearance of an unpopped corn kernel. It is growing very slowly, and does not seem to be causing him any exceptional pain or discomfort, other than the occasional flashing.
So, is this hole in the head disease? Should I be concerned for other cichlids in the tank? I have had them at 1.001 salinity for approximately a month now, trying to get rid of whatever is causing their flashing and a small fungal infection of a wound on my green severum. Any thoughts on treatment options (generally I'm very anti-chemical)? Should I net him and attempt to pull the growth out with tweezers?
He is in a 120gal tank with a large pleco, small Sajica (thanks to Jason), two black convicts, a green and a gold severum, an African ropefish, and some guppies. The nitrates are reasonable and I do a 75% water change every other weekend along with gravel vacuuming, while the filter is cleaned once per month.
Thanks in advance,
Greg
I would suggest posting these to www.cichlid-forum.com. They have an illness health and nutrition forum with some pretty experienced folks.
Thanks Sam, I'll do that. It doesn't look like HITH to me either, as my severum had a mild bout with it last spring, and I cured it with a few weeks of salt treatment. This does not seem to be responding to salt.

It does not look like hole-in-the-head, which I've seen several times in Oscars... other than that, I have no clue sorry. It sounds like you're doing the right things.
